The cupola ventilated the haymow and crowned the barn. It was also the first thing to blow off in a windstorm — and the surest clue to a barn’s age.
“A well-detailed square cupola straddles the roof — paneled walls with pointed-arch louvered openings, a moulded cornice overhang, and a weathervane on a wood finial and copper spire.”
Fifty plates, each printed large enough to read the joinery. Every cupola here stood on a barn that has since come down. Numbering follows the order in which they were photographed.
